It's amazing how many women live with painful, heavy periods and think it is normal. They have irregular cycles, pain mid-cycle or during their periods, and put up with fluctuating moods during their cycle. I was one of those people, and my GP just stuck me on the pill. I was 15 at the time. I had horrendous pain, breakthrough bleeding and my moods were horrible. I remember by mum tearing her hair out at the irritability and mood swings. I had digestion problems that came and went as part of my cycle too. It was pretty miserable.
I wish I had known then what I know now! Acupuncture is fantastic at dealing with all aspects of our monthly cycles. Due to the unique way it looks at the whole self it can target the problems encountered in a gentle and nourishing way.
The same layer of the body, the Jueyin, which regulates the coagulation of blood, it's thickness and also it's ease of flow also regulates the irritability and anger many of us encounter in the run up to our periods. A few carefully placed needles can help both things in one go.
As Chinese medicine takes the whole system into account the layer of Taiyin can be used to treat both issues of irregularity and acute pain as well as being indicated for many digestive issues, and so this layer can also help treat and regulate symptoms that in western medicine would not be linked together. Chinese medicine is fantastic for Women's Health!
