I am a keen surfer; I ditched my job, sold my house and moved to Cornwall to pursue my surfing dream in 2006. I was a surf coach for nine years, gaining my International Surf Association (ISA) Level 2 as well as an ISA Surf Judge qualification. I coached a wide variety of beginners and intermediate and was proud to support local juniors and ladies groups.
I know how hard it can be when you have an ailment or surf injury that keeps you out of the water; whether that is musculoskeletal in nature or a chronic illness. Surf injuries make you cranky and grumpy, don't they?!
Acupuncture is really helpful as a tool to help tame those sore shoulders and dodgy knees, as well as as a preventative measure to keep you surfing. I've supported patients with acupuncture for sciatica, lower back pain, and ankle injuries through recovery and beyond. Based in Penzance I'm close to plenty of surf breaks.
The Feldenkrais Method can encourage the sensing of habitual movement patterns, and a large number of the lessons are really useful for surfing, from awareness of your feet to allowing better rotation in the thoracic spine. Have you ever looked at a surfer and seen how one sided they are from habitually having one foot forward? This alone can lead to all sorts of imbalances and injuries. I use the method following acupuncture treatment, or as a stand alone to help guide your own knowledge of your movement patterns and habits. My surfing has improved without me consciously trying as a happy side effect of the Feldenkrais Method.
